Recovering Suppressed History

First broadcast: Mon 04.05.2015, 11.00 Uhr MEZ
Rerun: Wed 20.05.2015, 21.00 Uhr MEZ
A Broadcast in collaboration with: Bisan Abu-Eisheh

In the context of his artistic investigation The Archival Mechanism Bisan Abu-Eisheh studies questions of identity on the basis of his father’s private archive. His father was an actor, who was imprisoned by the Israelis at the beginning of the 1980s. The archive material, now more than thirty years old, documents his father’s exchange of letters with people outside of the prison during his internment, but also includes images and pieces of writing he exchanged with other (former) prisoners after his release. In his handling of this material the artist directs attention, not only to the unfolding of a private story but also to these people’s social norms, political language, living conditions and ideologies, which are all viewed in the context of their desire for freedom in a society under occupation.

On 10th April 2015 Bisan Abu-Eisheh invited the public to participate in his research – to join him in reading, analyzing and discussing the texts and photos from his archive. The recording of this discussion formed the centrepoint of the Büchs’n Radio broadcast.
