Sous les yeux vigilants/Under the Watchful Eyes

The 1931 International Colonial Exhibition in Paris and resistance that formed as a response to it were examined using period-specific photographs and recently disclosed police files. The role of the indigenous people employed there and the colonial archive were examined in-depth in order to discuss the crisis-prone call to join a “la plus grand France” as it relates to a contemporary, receptive look at past events: what is the scope of a cultural reception as proposed, for example, by Tony Bennet’s term “exhibitionary complex”?
