turning inward|trading out – Falten und ineinander verschlungene Überlagerungen von Ökonomie und Religion an einem städtischen Ort in Istanbul

In the Follow-Ups series, artist and author Sandra Schäfer showed her video turning inward|trading out. This video was made in the context of the artist’s 2011/12 fellowship and co-produced by Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen.

Sandra Schäfer’s video turning inward|trading out deals with the intersections of economy and religion at an urban site in Istanbul. Interest is focused on the Iranian mosque located inside the Ottoman Valide Han caravanserai (inn) in the Tahtakale district. The title turning inward|trading out refers to the overlapping of the outward-bound trade in this area and the enclosed space of the Iranian mosque in the courtyard of the old caravanserai. The video traces the links, spatial narratives and documents that refer to overlaps with and distancing from the Iranian Revolution in Turkey at the end of the 1970s. Schäfer weaves this heterogeneous material into a filmic narrative that remains fragmentary in itself. The video was made in collaboration with Istanbul-based journalist Ayşe Çavdar.
