WHEN THE MUSIC STOPS MY TROUBLES BEGIN
The video presentation focused on Nemerofsky Ramsay’s work from the previous three years, much of which dealt with emotional relationship patterns and their representation in musically prepared media formats (news channel, pop video, video surveillance system, etc). He also presented the then work-in-progress When the Music Stops My Troubles Begin, which was produced in Büchsenhausen. The work was completed in 2004 as a five-channel video installation. Titled Lyric it was presented at Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen in late 2006 as part of the Private Investigations exhibition series.
Another work created at Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen—Audition Tape—staged a bogus search for a new member for the Russian girl band t.A.T.u. History, sexuality and identity issues collide in a musical monologue inspired by the aesthetics of American Idol contests. The video was first shown at the Inside Out Lesbian and Gay Film Festival in Toronto in 2003, where it also won the Colin Campbell Memorial Prize.
Benny Nemerofsky RAMSAY (*1973 in Montreal) created video, text and sound works using song, self-reflexive performance and pop music lyrics as vehicles for examining the singing voice, the (un-)translatability of emotions into language and the influence of technology and popular culture on our emotional expression.
